Good Habits: Keeping Track of Your Own Accomplishments Should be Ongoing

by Mel Brown | Candiate Products, Career, Interview, Job Hunt, Profile, Profile Signup, Resume

What’s In Your Future?

Most people don’t know when they will be laid off or terminated. It’s usually a surprise. Don’t be left holding the unemployment bag because you didn’t keep track of your projects, accomplishments, and experience.

You haven’t kept up with your experience and accomplishments, and now you need it all in one place. Now that you know better, you can do better and get crackin’ on keeping your information consistently up-to-date, so you don’t get caught holding the bag later on. Remember that it’s not about IF the proverbial **** will hit the fan…it’s about WHEN. So always be ready, just in case.

The worst part of the job search is realizing you haven’t updated your resume and trying to remember what you’ve done in the past. It can be overwhelming in addition to the gravity of having to find a job and the pressure to create a new resume immediately.

Imagine getting laid off or being so disengaged at work that you need to find another job…now. But, you don’t have an updated resume, you don’t remember all of the projects you were a part of, certifications you obtained, the money you saved the company working on a specific program, etc.

Keeping an accomplishments file has multiple benefits.

  1. You can easily answer questions about your experience.
  2. Updating your resume and Pointe Profile® is a breeze.
  3. If you feel a little emotionally down-in-the-dumps, you can use it as inspiration and motivation.

Your Pointe Profile® is a living work of your experience that you should update every time you accomplish something new.

Ideas for creating your Accomplishments File

Create a folder on your hard drive or, better yet, on Dropbox, iCloud, EverNote, etc., with a Word/Pages document that has a list of all your accomplishments, big and small. Include photos, videos, or any other collateral that is appropriate and doesn’t violate company policy.

My favorite method is to create an email address for my accomplishments like, i.e., yournameherekudos@gmail.com. Whenever I think something is relevant, I jot it down in a quick email and send it to myself. Easy peasy. In the event of an unexpected job search, there’s an inbox record. Boom.

Additionally, CXP ushers in the era of the video testimonial. If it’s appropriate to get a video testimonial at the end of a project, do it THEN, don’t put it off until later because it won’t happen. You’ll have missed your chance.

Documenting your own accomplishments on an ongoing basis should become a regular part of your professional behavior and demeanor. Our free ebook can help you get started!
